Evolution of Urban Spatial Clusters in China: A Graph-Based Method Using Nighttime Light Data

چکیده

An urban spatial cluster (USC) describes one or more geographic agglomerations and the linkages among cities. USCs are conventionally delineated based on predefined administrative boundaries of cities, without considering dynamic evolving nature extent USCs. This study uses Defense Meteorological Satellite Program/Operational Linescan System (DMSP/OLS) nighttime light (NTL) satellite images to quantitatively detect characterize evolution We propose a minimum spanning tree (DMST) subgraph partitioning method identify over time, which considers both proximity built-up areas their affiliations with at previous snapshot. China is selected as case for its rapid urbanization process cluster-based economic development strategy. Four DMSTs generated using extracted from DMSP/OLS NTL collected in 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012. Each DMST partitioned into various subtrees connected by same subtree identified potential USC. By inspecting three different types obtained, including newly emerging, single-core, multicore clusters. Using rank-size distribution, we find that large-sized have greater than medium- small-sized A clear directionality heterogeneity observed expansions ten largest Our provides further insight understanding system structures, assists policymakers planning practices national regional scales.

Urban Growth and Rural Transition in China Based on DMSP/OLS Nighttime Light Data

Nighttime light (NTL) images provide uniform, consistent, and valuable data sources. Based on four reference regions, the NTL imagery of China was fully intercalibrated during the period 1992–2012. Using lit areas and the intensity of NTL imagery, this study synthetically analyzed the urbanization process and rural transition in China. The results showed that, over the whole country, the pixel ...

Monitoring Urban Clusters Expansion in the Middle Reaches of the Yangtze River, China, Using Time-Series Nighttime Light Images

The urban clusters in the Middle Reaches of the Yangtze River (MRYR) in China include the Chang-Zhu-Tan urban agglomeration, the Wuhan metropolitan area, and the Poyang Lake urban agglomeration. While previous studies of urban expansion in China focused mainly on the coastal regions, this study aimed to investigate urban expansion patterns and factors in the MRYR, which are crucial for urban de...

Assessing Light Pollution in China Based on Nighttime Light Imagery

Rapid urbanization and economic development inevitably lead to light pollution, which has become a universal environmental issue. In order to reveal the spatiotemporal patterns and evolvement rules of light pollution in China, images from 1992 to 2012 were selected from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Operational Linescan System (DMSP/OLS) and systematically corrected to ensure con...

A Simulation Study on the Urban Population of China Based on Nighttime Light Data Acquired from DMSP/OLS

The urban population (UP) measure is one of the most direct indicators that reflect the urbanization process and the impacts of human activities. The dynamics of UP is of great importance to studying urban economic, social development, and resource utilization. Currently, China lacks long time series UP data with consistent standards and comparability over time. The nighttime light images from ...

Mapping Development Pattern in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Urban Agglomeration Using DMSP/OLS Nighttime Light Data

Spatial inequality of urban development may cause problems like inequality of living conditions and the lack of sustainability, drawing increasing academic interests and societal concerns. Previous studies based on statistical data can hardly reveal the interior mechanism of spatial inequality due to the limitation of statistical units, while the application of remote sensing data, such as nigh...
